The redevelopment of Kihumbuini Stadium is now more than 70 per cent complete, with the facility set for completion within the coming months.

Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja on Friday said the project, which aligns with City Hall’s sports facility upgrade plan, has made significant progress, with key components including the terraces and changing rooms already completed as the county moves into the final phase of works.

“I am pleased with the progress of Kihumbuini Stadium. The works are over 70 per cent complete. The terraces are ready and the changing rooms are also ready. We are now working on the turf to be laid on the ground soon, together with the shades,” said Sakaja.

He said the transformation of Kihumbuini Stadium was part of a broader county programme to upgrade sports facilities across Nairobi and ensure residents have access to modern and properly equipped sporting grounds.

According to him, the facility will be particularly important to residents of Kangemi and Westlands, providing a modern space for sports, recreation and community activities.

Sakaja noted that Kihumbuini had for years been left behind in terms of infrastructure development but was now receiving the attention needed to transform it into a modern community sports facility.

“This stadium has for long been left behind, but it is now making great progress. With the works already ongoing in our stadiums, Dandora will be one of the best,” he said.

Sakaja said the county was also undertaking similar upgrades at other sporting facilities, including Woodley Stadium and City Stadium, as part of efforts to raise the standard of sports infrastructure across Nairobi.

He said the projects would provide young people with better facilities to nurture sporting talent while creating safe and accessible spaces for recreation and community activities.

“Kihumbuini will be ready in a few months. Next year we shall be here to launch it. The same works are ongoing at Woodley Stadium and City Stadium to make sure that we elevate these estate stadiums to the level they need to be,” he said.

The redevelopment programme includes improvements to playing surfaces, terraces, changing rooms, shades and other supporting facilities, giving Nairobi’s sporting grounds a major facelift.

Sakaja said the county would continue investing in sports infrastructure across the city to ensure quality sporting facilities are accessible to communities across Nairobi.
