KDF shoot down rivals in National Boxing League in Vihiga

Kenya Open champions Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) amassed 23 points to win the third leg of the National Boxing League in Vihiga over the weekend.
Coming second were the record Kenyan champions, Kenya Police, who only managed a paltry 12 points, to confirm their challenges earlier expressed by head coach James Wasao.
"We are heading to Vihiga but we have serious challenges in the team but I'll do with the number of boxers in my contingent," Wasao had earlier told Standard Sports.
Interestingly, Africa light middleweight champion Boniface Mogunde missed the event to confirm the policemen's fears.
The events in Vihiga have given the soldiers a chance to win the league title without much fight, but team manager Ben Maingi is very cautious on their chances of wrestling the diadem.

"We are very keen on this title, and we are taking a step at a time without underrating any team on our way to the title," he said.
KDF has widened the overall gap between them and the policemen with 23 points to be perched at the table standings with 72 points.
Police are runners-up with 50 points.
On their way to the top in Vihiga, KDF had six boxers winning their bouts in the finals at Mumboa Secondary School in Luanda.
They were led by national light heavyweight champion Robert Okaka and his bantamweight counterpart Dennis Muthama.
Okaka stopped policeman George Cosby as Muthama overcame James Tachia of Nakuru Amateur Boxing Club (ABC) 4-1 points.
Light middleweight Alvin Oduor, bantamweight Pauline Chege, welterweight Fred Omondi and heavyweight Peter Abuti were the other soldiers who equally won their final bouts in addition to the first two.
Oduor beat Joseph Shigali of Police 4-1, Chege beat Rahab Mumbi of Police on unanimous points' decision, Omondi defeated Joshua Onyango of Kisumu on unanimous points' decision, and Abuti stopped Steve Okoyo of Vihiga on RSC Round 1.
"I had improved on my previous performance after previous defeats to win this time round," Omondi said.
The event saw a number of the current and former international champions not honouring the event.
On their part, the policemen had only three boxers who won their matches in the finals.
They were flyweight Abdalla Juma, bantamweight Amina Martha and super heavyweight Clinton Macharia.
Juma dismissed Isaac Karanja of Sombea 5-0, Martha beat Mary Anyango of Nairobi from an abandoned tie in the first round and Macharia won on RSC in Round 1 over Henry Ochieng' of Kenya Prisons.
On their part, Kasarani boxers lightweight Benedict Juma, featherweight Chris Juma and minimumweight Damackline Boyani won their bouts in the finals.
Juma (Benedict) defeated Samuel Njau of KDF 5-0, Chris Juma beat Euticus Wanjau of Githurai 44 on RSC in Round Two, and Boyani beat Jane Wangare of Prisons 5-0.
In the overall standings after the third leg of the league championships in Vihiga, Sombea Boxing Club are third with 23 points, followed by Kasarani Youth 21, Kenya Prisons 19, Nairobi County 15, Nakuru ABC 14, Kibra 9, Githurai 44 - six, Vihiga County five, and Kisumu four points among the top 10 teams.
